eREVOLUTION Bike Lanes Save Lives • The statement “Bike Lanes Save Lives” is clear, direct, and backed by countless studies and evidence – not to mention common sense. Bike lanes don’t cause congestion, and numerous studies show they help relieve it. The Ontario Medical Association (OMA), the Bloor Annex Business Improvement Area, the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), and many others support bike lanes. Yet Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford and his Minister of Transportation, Prambeet Sarkaria, claim to know better. Despite hiring the engineering firm CIMA+, which estimated that removing the bike lanes could increase collisions for all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers, by as much as 54%, and found no clear evidence that removal would ease congestion, they persist in their stance. This conflict is less about good governance and more about who holds legislative power. One hopes that if enough voices are heard, saner minds will prevail. Yet the ballot box may be the next best option.
