Seeing things differently

Sovereigns soar to new heights in September • WHILE the universal appeal of the gold sovereign is a “given”, as our American cousins would say, and we are all well aware of the buoyancy of the current UK coin market, when the two things align, something rather astonishing happens. There had been great expectancy over the official Coinex Auction being held by Spink on September 24, as among the many stellar consignments there was the presentation of the Richard Threadgold Collection which provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure some sublime examples from the gold sovereign series. At the white-glove sale, a new world record at auction was set by lot 17, a Canada, Ottawa Mint, George V Specimen Satin-Finish Proof sovereign, dated 1911, struck from Yukon gold (ex-Norweb and Bentley). It secured £31,850, but that was only the beginning of records starting to tumble. Lot 15, a key-date issue, George V London sovereign dated 1917, also smashed the record when it sold for £44,100. More world records were set, and not just for the older issues; those of the Late Queen and King Charles III also hit new heights at auction: lot 93, an Elizabeth II, 1957 “Top Pop” sovereign sold for £18,375, while one of the King Charles III, Royal Mint “Silent Auction” (held on March 17, 2024, lot 5) Coronation Matte Proof sets, achieved an astonishing £67,375. A superb result all round and an exceptionally strong start to the numismatic auction season. For the full results of the sale, visit the website at www.spink.com.
